Academe was so slow to produce this research because it told the world things that those in academe would rather the world didn't know.

Alarming and interesting news about the value -- or lack of value -- of a college education.

The conclusion reached by The Chronicle: "American higher education is characterized by limited or no learning for a large proportion of students."

And they are taking on massive amounts of debt to pay for this . . . . nothing.

It's no secret that many people are predicting that large numbers of colleges will close shop in the next 10-20 years.

This will be interesting.

How cool is this photo of the main building of the University of Iceland, though?

  2. I know. Overheard on the train this morning: "My daughter was accepted at XXXX University [I didn't catch the name of the school.] Luckily, Penn gives me $35,000 a year for each of my kids who attend Penn, or half that if they go to another school. So that will help."

Two amazing things about this - that Penn is still so generous in subsidizing the educations of children of employees, and that $35,000/year doesn't cover the cost of attending Penn!

But it's a bargain for anyone who does get the subsidy, because if you attend Penn you are likely to learn something and to make the connections that will help you get an actual job later. Lots of other people are paying plenty for schools that give them neither advantage.
